The Department of General Surgery, Grant Govt. Medical College & Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals Mumbai stands apart as a centre of excellence in India, because of its unique ideologies, connectivity and persistent leadership in surgical training and health care for common people over the past one and a half-century.
The department examines over 1,00,000 patients annually, and about 6000 major and 10000 minor procedures are done each year. The department complex consists of a main operation theatre complex, emergency and septic operation theatre and a minor operation theatre. Numerous diagnostic and interventional, surgical, laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures are performed here

In 1835, Sir Robert Grant, the then Governor of Bombay visualized a systematic and scientific institution in Bombay for imparting comprehensive health care and medical training. The foundation stone of Grant Medical College was laid on 30th March 1843 and it was opened on 1st November,1845. Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy came forward with a donation of rupees one lakh for the establishment of a hospital, thus the foundation stone of Sir J.J.Hospital was laid on 3rd January 1843 and the inauguration took place on 15th May 1845.
In 1958, the old building was torn down and replaced by a seven storeyed hospital building. The department of General Surgery as we know it today is situated on the sixth floor of this new building. It is here, that the father of Indian Laparoscopic surgery, Dr Tehemtom Eruch Udwadia, Padmashree, Padma Bhushan, and a passionate teacher, performed the first ever laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in 1990, India. His student, Dr Luis Jose Desouza, Padmashree, Indian Surgical Oncologist, went on to establish the Indian Cancer cell at TATA Memorial Hospital and is a founder of Shanti Avedha Ashram.
Thus, over last 175 years, Department of General Surgery, Grant Medical College has produced a galaxy of eminent doctors and medical teachers & made its place on the world map.
